  • Laura's Star

  • Watch this beautiful Youtube video showing the internationally best selling children's book "Laura's Star" by Klaus Baumgart.

If you enjoy this story you can then buy the book or you even have the choice of downloading an interactive app on Ipod, Ipad or Android. Just do a search in the App Store or Play Store for "Laura's Star" and it will come up.
  • Shapes games
  • Introduce your child to shapes including the star shape. There are numerous games on the computer, Ipad and Android but the quickest and easiest way is to first draw some shapes on paper. Then your child can try and trace over and even colour in.
  • Some online shape games we like are found at Babytv.com and in particular the Shapes Train. If you want to have a look click on the picture below.

  • When you want to finish off playing with shapes then why don't you suggest trying to make certain shapes with your child out of your hands. Squares, triangles and circles are easy but when you ask them to do Twinkle Twinkle Little Star as a shape that gets trickier! This shape is much better making together as a team. Once you have done this you can then tell your child what a star they are for helping and how much they are loved and that they are your special star!
  • Let your child be a super star and make a microphone for them to sing into. This is an activity you can make in less than ten minutes. Roll up a ball of paper and then cover it in foil if you have some available. Put a hole through the middle of it (about the width of a finger) then stick or tie it onto a small tube of cardboard. We tied ours on with black wool and then we left a bit of the wool coming out of the microphone to make it look more realistic.

    Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Microphone

You now have a homemade working microphone as your voice echoes down the tube. You can then have fun decorating it with your child how you like. Make one for each of you or take it in turns using it to sing a song or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
  • Here are some facts about stars. Did you know that
  • the nearest star to us is the sun.
  • not all stars are white or yellow like our sun. The hottest stars are blue and the coolest stars are red.
  • you can look back in time. This is because it takes a long time for starlight to reach earth. When we sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and are looking out at the brightest star in the sky we are probably looking at a star called Sirius, but Sirius is still very far away and it takes four years for its starlight to reach us. So when we are looking at it we are seeing how it was four years ago in the past.
  • our sun is only 8 light minutes away.
  • with telescopes you can see much greater distances and see stars that are much further away. The Hubble telescope is a telescope that is set out in space which gives us a much clearer view. Using the Hubble Telescope, you can see light from the Eagle Nebula, which takes 7,000 years to reach the Earth!
  • Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is probably the best known and best loved poem in the English Language and was written by Jane Taylor (1783-1824). It was first called 'The Star' and appeared in 'Rhymes for the Nursery' published in 1806 which was a joint work written with her sister Ann. When the book first came out however Twinkle Twinkle Little Star was less popular than one of Ann's nursery rhymes entitled 'My Mother', but only Twinkle Twinkle Little Star has stood the test of time. It wasn't until 1838 that the lyrics from 'The Star' were first published with the tune in The Singing Master: First Class Tune Book.
